What Else to do in the Area

With its impressive motorway and rail links, Goole makes a great base for visitors who want to explore the wider Yorkshire region. The East Coast, the North Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, the Yorkshire Wolds and the historic city of York are all less than an hour's drive away. Some of Yorkshire's finest racecourses - at York, Beverley and Doncaster - are all little more than half an hour away.

However, it's also worth taking time to visit some of the attractions on offer in Goole itself, as well of those of nearby towns and villages.

Goole

Life in Goole has always centred around the docks, locks and canal basins built by the Aire and Calder Navigation Company. Today it's the busiest inland port in the country and also has a lively Marina, where hundreds of privately-owned leisure boats are moored.

A stone's throw from the marina is the Yorkshire Waterways Museum, where you can find out more about the importance that the waterways played in Goole's development as a port and town. Interactive exhibits, model boats and walk-in displays tell the port's story, and an arts barge plays host to visiting photographic and contemporary art exhibitions. You can also follow the mile-long nature trail extending along the canal towpath towards the village of Rawcliffe.

In Goole town centre there's a Victorian Market, as well as Goole Museum and Art Gallery, which is located above the town's library on the corner of Carlisle Street. Next to the market is Junction, Goole's vibrant new theatre, cinema, cafè bar and arts venue. The Courtyard, a community centre on Boothferry Road, Goole, regularly hosts Farmers' Markets, where you can buy fantastic local produce.

Children will enjoy the range of play equipment and fun activities on offer at Fun Run on Rawcliffe Road, Goole, especially if the weather isn't good.

Howden

The historic market town of Howden, which is just five miles away, has a spectacular Minster and a quaint Market Place bordered by a good selection of shops, cafès, pubs and restaurants. It also has a peaceful nature reserve, known as Howden Marsh.
